To Kill A Mockingbird-the Play
The American literary classic To Kill a Mockingbird was inspired in part by the historic town of Monroeville, AL where author Harper Lee grew up. Every spring, the story comes to life on stage in a play adaptation crafted by the late Christopher Sergel. The performance takes place at the Otha Lee Briggs Amphitheater and the Old Courthouse Museum, and features a group of local actors known as the Mockingbird Players. During the trial scene, members of the audience can even be asked to participate in the performance.
The To Kill a Mockingbird play is performed in two acts, detailing the lives of Jean Louise Finch (Scout), her older brother, Jeremy (Jem), their best friend, Dill, and their father, Atticus Finch, who is also the town lawyer. The story takes place in the small fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama and revolves around the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man who was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Violet Ewell. Arthur “Boo” Radley, Scout’s neighbor, also plays an important role in the progression of the story and in the development of the other characters.
