Person Looking At Library Books

While you’re visiting Alabama’s Literary Capital, it’s only fitting to stop by the Monroe County Public Library.  Home to thousands of books and e-books, the library draws book lovers of all ages to its shelves. But that’s not all the library has to offer. The building, which was constructed in 1939, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a prime destination for history buffs, movie fanatics and more.

A Fascinating Piece of Monroeville History

Before this building became the Monroe County Public Library in 1984, it was actually a hotel and later a restaurant. The La Salle Hotel was a prominent fixture in the community, and many famous people stayed there, including Academy Award winning actor, Gregory Peck, and his wife Veronique. While preparing for his role as Atticus Finch in the film, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” he slept in this very building.

Today, you can check out your own copy of Harper Lee’s classic story and explore the same rooms where Peck walked. You can also find books from other notable Monroe County authors, including Truman Capote and Mark Childress.
