About To Kill a Mockingbird

First published in 1960 by J.B. Lippincott, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the 1930s in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. Told through young Scout Finch’s point of view, the novel depicts the story of a black man, Tom Robinson, who is accused of attacking a white woman. Scout’s father, attorney Atticus Finch, hopelessly strives to prove the man’s innocence in a time where racial discrimination runs rampant in the segregated South. Along the way, the novel introduces readers to Arthur “Boo” Radley, a recluse who saves Scout and her brother, Jem, from being killed.

Immediately after publication, the novel won a Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 1961 and has become a classic of modern American literature. The influence of To Kill a Mockingbird on generations of readers cannot be understated, and today the book remains a favorite beloved by individuals of all ages and from all walks of life.
